Joseph J. Carlson
Joseph Carlson, PhD. Since October 2005, Joe has served as the Director of the Sports and Cardiovascular Nutrition which includes the Spartan Nutrition and Performance Program (SNAPP). He is jointly appointed with MSU's Dept of Food Science and Human Nutrition. He received his degrees from MSU including a BS in Nutrition/ Dietetics (85), Masters (88) and PhD (97) in Exercise Physiology with a cognate in Nutrition. He is a Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD) with the American Dietetic Association. His training and professional experiences include a Post-doctoral research fellowship in Nutrition at the Stanford University School of Medicine, Center for Research in Disease Prevention (97-99) followed by serving as a Research Associate (99-01). From 2001-05 Joe served as an Assistant Professor and Director of the Coordinated Masters Program in Nutrition and Dietetics at the University of Utah, Division of Nutrition. Other professional experiences included corporate health promotion (1987-90), Public Health Nutrition for the State of Nevada (1990-92), and working as an Exercise Physiologist and Dietitian in the Dept. of Preventive Cardiology and Rehabilitation at Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids, MI (1993-97). Professional service activities have included serving on the Board of Directors for the American Association of Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation and serving on their editorial board. Dr. Carlson’s research has included clinical trials and epidemiology involving nutrition, exercise and cardiovascular health. Joe enjoys spending time with his wife, daughter and son, and keeps active with a variety of physical activities.
